Bye Bye Lex!
It has happened! Michael Rosenbaum has decided not to stay on Smallville as a Series Regular. While neither Rosenbaum or the show runners have written Lex Luthor out of Season Eight, Rosenbaum has kept true to his words, that Season Seven would be his last season on Smallville. My Opinion: It's about time! Michael is a talented actor who needs to spread his wings. While I have no doubt SV has been a great launching ground and has taken him from a small-time actor to a full blown star, he needs to broaden his horizon. I can't wait to see Michael tackle other roles, possible tougher and even more complex and dramatic roles. I just hope he won't be cursed like many who make a name for themselves through one show and becomes cast-typed. (Think Mark-Paul Gosselaar transitioning from Zack Morris and beyond). I really hope to see more of Michael in other roles, other shows, and on the big screen.

The official word is that they're not ruling out the possibility of Michael Rosenbaum/Lex Luthor returning for a few episodes but it's unknown if/when. I'm sure Smallville would love for him to return. In fact, they had tried very hard to get him to stay. In any case, I hope Michael will return for the series finale.
As I recall, the original idea was for Smallville to go a maximum of seven seasons, hence, the contracts ending at the end of this season. I felt that it probably would've been good to end after about five seasons as they've really dragged this out. But I'm excited with this season (finally after having not watched it for years regularly - still not this year) with the revelations that are happening, including the episode from tonigt.
